Throughout the whole process of preparing for our wedding, we were constantly being pulled in various directions by the many tasks that we had to complete. From selecting our outfits to choosing the venue decor, there was a constant barrage of details that fought for our attention.
To ensure that we had a good record of this whole process, we decided to create a wedding memory book. 20 years later, we would be able to refer to this book and reminisce about a time when black was still the primary colour of our hair. The wedding memory book was meant to be a handmade record of the key details of significant events leading up to the wedding.
Most of our materials, including the album, “special” paper and other accessories, were purchased at a shop called “Made With Love” which was located at Plaza Singapura. The shop sold an amazing range of scrapbooking items and even held workshops for regular customers. Our very first batch of materials was bought from this shop, and it cost us a whopping $150!! While we had a good idea of the content to be covered, we were truly taken by surprise at the cost of materials and accessories.
Having invested more than expected, we were determined to make our wedding memory book a success. Together, we determined what exactly should appear on every page, and the sequence of the pages. Our initial enthusiasm was quickly put to the test when we ended up taking more than 1 day just to complete the first page!
The wedding memory book almost met with an early death then. However, we drew strength from the knowledge that we had already spent more than $100 on materials, and soldiered on, determined not to let our investment go to waste.
Almost every other night after work was spent drafting layouts, and getting our hands dirty from pasting and cutting. In particular, after I usually left her flat at about 12am, Phebe would work late into the night to ensure that we complete the project on time.
The creation of the memory book was a painstaking journey. Although it was not technically difficult, it was often very tedious, and we spent many nights just cutting cardboard, printing photos or editing copy. Somehow, we managed to complete the memory book just before our wedding solemnisation, and eagerly displayed it to our guests. Even now, there is still an unmistakeable sense of accomplishment whenever we view the completed memory book.
